Invitation to NominateJune __, 2009
Dear Jeff: The purpose of this letter is to provide you the opportunity to nominate a not for profit organization for this Firm’s Civic Initiative. Each year, this Firm commits to a carefully selected group of civic, social service, educational, arts, community development or other non-profit organizations that for one year or more we will contribute our expertise, experience, time and energy. Each organization uses these resources for some or all of their legal, strategic, financial and planning needs. With respect to legal needs, the assistance has included all of the organization’s legal needs or the organization’s legal needs in a certain area(s), e.g. real estate, employment law, joint ventures, consolidations, compliance with new federal or state laws, contracts, litigation, governance, financing, tax, etc. We call this our Civic Initiative. The goals of our Civic Initiative include: (1) helping the organization “be all it can be” in serving the multiple and deep needs of the community; (2) contributing to the quality of the organization’s decision making; (3) ensuring that the organization does not let budgetary concerns get in the way of receiving the professional advice the organization needs; and (4) saving the organization the expense for these services so they can redeploy those monies for the needs of the community. How do we choose these organizations? For the most part, the community chooses them. We reach out to the corporate, political, professional, civic, foundation, neighborhood, governmental, educational and not-for-profit leadership of the community and to our clients and friends asking them to nominate organizations. That is the reason for this letter. Are there any organizations for which you feel this Firm’s commitment would be helpful? If so, with respect to each organization, please let us know as soon as possible. The Firm’s selection process is much like the process that a foundation or corporation goes through in making its grant making decisions. Unfortunately, every year, the nominations greatly exceed the number of organizations to which the Civic Initiative can commit. As a catalyst for your thoughts, enclosed is a list of some of the organizations or types of organizations that have received this Firm’s Civic Initiative commitment. This is one small way in which this Firm tries to contribute to its various communities. With best regards,
Michael L. Barrett Jennifer L. Carroll Eric J. Harter Thomas R. Peppard, Jr. Terrance L. Ryan J Kearney Shanahan Kirsten D. Varouh Enclosure
